Most comprehensive app for hiking/biking

No doubt, this is the most complete/comprehensive app for hiking and biking I have found. - Design your own interface including virtually any data you like. - Altitude based on GPS or taken from TOPO info. - Distance, Time, Speed: current, average, moving, maximum, etc…. - Destination information: distance. bearing, time, pointer, etc….. - compass - display information using hard numbers, graphs, or dials - Great maps - ETC. ETC, ETC - Really, too many options to list. This my “go to” app for hiking off trail. You can use the ViewRanger web site to create a route, sync with you iPhone, and follow the route. Or, if you have a .gpx file you can upload to the web site, and sync with your iPhone to follow. Many, many options. When you get back you can upload your hike and view/edit on the ViewRanger web site, create a route, and share with others. Great user community. Many routes available for free.

VR on the Camino del Norte

We have loved View Ranger on the Camino. Easy to use and we dont get lost.

Great app

Amazing app for navigation and outdoor activities. The recent update has made it more useful :)

Getting more and more difficult to use

With every update, viewranger gets more confusing and more difficult to use. It was good, now its maddingly frustrating. What was one click away is now hidden layers deep. What was obvious now requires searchingbthe manual and asking for support. Not useful in the field anymore

Awesome

Cant recommend this app enough. Ive tried them all. Great UI. Easy to navigate. Accurate. Just about ready to ditch garmin handheld. Battery life great with iPhone 6+

Confusing and difficult to use

Although in town and city it may work well. When off-road or hiking using maps is a nitemare. To bad the app has promise but lacks seriously in this regard. Virtually no help resources.

Good, some bugs, UI needs a complete overhaul

The user interface is maddening -- completely non-intuitive. When it works it is great, but it does have a few bugs that may or may not be corrected in the latest version. I have had it refuse to work (continually crash) on occasion when there is no network connection. It seems to help if you have it running before you go off-grid. That may be fixed, because it hasnt done it lately. It also seems to have some variable limit on the amount of time it will record (silently quits recording sometimes), and on occasion it will completely lose your recorded track after you stop and try to save it. Seems to be a poorly handled network comm thing. Really needs some serious rewrite and hard-core software validation testing. Bottom-Line: Fun, but you gotta take a paper map too if you are deep into the unknown.

Bad

Just awful. Terrible GUI. Nothing worked and no trails could be found. I couldnt even find well known landmarks. Download Motionx-GPS. I just wasted $2.00.

Great powerful offline nav app

I used this app a lot when I was in the mountains, either hiking or mtb. The really good part is you can download the high detailed map before you go and it will be cached on your phone. Nice!

So far, so good

Ive used this to track 4 hikes over the last month or so and it seems to work well. Accuracy seems good, based on the fact that it overlaps with trails marked on the map. I do notice that it overstates elevation gain on the app and corrects them downward when I sync to the site. Not too hard on phone battery as long as you switch to airline mode when service is spotty. Overall pleased.

Maps

Love this app. GPS works awesome.

Very good among others

Love this app, more trails showing than google

Solid mapper for right price

A little awkward to use at first but simple enough once you get the hang of it and 20$ for countrywide topo access is far better than the alternatives I saw. I would like to see a little more zoom in the topos, but they are totally usable as they are.

Great for hiking

This has been a great app for hiking with my dog. I just wish it told you how many miles instead of km.

Overall great app with some bugs

This app is great for hiking with lots of features than similar apps like ability to download offline maps, altitude measurement and gain but with some bugs like inability to resume my activity after pause which frequently got started from the beginning.. Please fix..otherwise great app..

Bought for C2C but using it in US now too

I purchased this app to hike the Wainwright Coast-to-Coast trail because the British mountain rescue teams use it along with the Standard UK OS maps, with readily available GPX waypoint files. But it turns out there are maps available for the US too, so now Ive been using it for tracking mileage on all my local hikes too, both big and small.

Brilliant!

A free map app that actually works and has major trails on it. And its free. Used it exclusively on a thru-hike of the LSHT recently. No issues at all.

Great reliable and accurate maps

Downloaded maps for free for use in areas without cell coverage. I have found these incredibly useful many times in the Sierra Mountains for skiing, biking, and hiking.

Replaced my stand alone GPS

Great application. I use it extensively kayaking and in hikes.
