ViewRanger: Hike, Bike or Walk App Reviews

Getting more and more difficult to use

With every update, viewranger gets more confusing and more difficult to use. It was good, now its maddingly frustrating. What was one click away is now hidden layers deep. What was obvious now requires searching the manual and asking for support. Not useful in the field anymore

Nice tool

Still happy with VR and using regularly. A bunch of new trails have been made in a State Park near me. ViewRanger has helped figure how they are connected to existing trails and has kept me out of peoples backyards when I went off course. Easy to use, syncs to phone, iPad, and desktop.

Wouldnt go hiking without it

Living in the Alps, having the app is a must. I love that it works without internet and is perfect to use even in remote areas. Highly recomended!

Love it!

Its pretty tight and easy to use.

Pass on this

The UI is clunky and isnt very intuitive. Its more difficult to use than it needs to be.

Like a Virus

This App is like a virus. It freezes your iPhone repeatedly and if you try to use it, it throws you into endless loops of requests that you cant get out of. Delete, delete, delete! Tried multiple times after several clean installs, same horrible result every time.

Disappointed

I use a number of running apps and this a total FAIL. Doesnt seem to to have a switch to miles from km in setting. With GPS on it powers up to Missouri in map view ( I am 10 miles outside of New York City ) Its just not intuitive, simple to use. It may be an excellent powerful tool but I can seem to get it to just zoom in to my location sitting on my porch.

Not worth your time

This app is truly not very good. It has limited access to trail info, and is not an intuitive interface. The search function is horrible, I typed in Mt. Washington, NH and nothing came up; type Mount Washington, NH and you get everything in the country with Washington in the name. For an app featured in an Apple keynote event I expected much more.

Poor password support

Got off to a bad start as soon as I tried to create an account and the app complained that a 16 character password was "too long". There is absolutely no reason for a selfie limitation like that in 2016 when we are all using password managers. Once I dove deeper into the app I found it counterintuitive and somewhat clunky. Still willing to give it a shot.

Exhausting, confusing interface and settings

Just excitedly downloaded in anticipation using with my new Apple Watch. Not easily accessible – the interface & settings are counterintuitive. I dont need things dumbed down, but I need them elegantly designed for constant use. Both the app and the website seem more hype than substance, with the real goal being to extract as much cash as possible from users. Disappointed.

Great app!

Is now my hiking go to! Love the offline capabilities, now I really want an Apple Watch to use along side

Why do you need to have yet another account with another website?

This app initially looked promising as you didnt appear to need an account. From a privacy standpoint your maps and routes are saved on your device and it appeared that you only needed to have an account if you wanted to upload your data for sharing or to synchronize your devices. But noooo - you cant buy anything without an account because they use "credits" - which can only be purchased with an account on their website. When a guest can buy maps and routes via the App store (like I can with, for example, Navigon) then Ill consider using this app. Until them Im deleting it.

Few Real Trails, Requires Another Signup

Another app that makes you create a separate login (theres no valid reason I see). And when searching for trails, I dont see any real trails. Just trails labeled "Backpack with the boys" and stuff like that. I guess you can recreate random other peoples trail diaries, but they dont have it loaded with popular trail maps or anything. If this ditched the sign ups and partnered with a trail map database, this could be a much better app. Not much value for me as it is now though.

Very disappointing

This app is VERY VERY disappointing and not at all what was advertised. First I purchased the maps only find the trails werent depicted. These same trails were depicted on the viewrangers landscape maps (free maps) which lead me to believe the trail would show on the purchased map. I had hoped to get better topography and the trail...NOPE...the free maps are the best. Second, I cant follow a trail (at least best as I can tell) unless someone has already created a route and shared. What I mean is although Humbug Trail is seen on the ViewRanger landscape free maps, I cant follow it unless a route is created. I tried to create a route, but the trail curves - a lot - to create an accurate route Id have to put a waypoint at every dash as seen on the map. I could hike the trail and create a route that way. However, that defeats the purpose of having a map and watch/iphone that tells me which way to turn on the trail! Third, it is very difficult to figure out. Took me forever to figure out how to save a map and I still cant figure out how to delete a downloaded route that someone else created. I can easily google the trails I use and follow a map the old fashion way. As stated very disappointed.

Very useful

I have used this without an account hiking in Massachusetts and Maine on day hikes and overnighters. The compass and maps including trails have been very good and taken the guess work out decisions needed for obscure and even unsigned trails. I have found trails that were left out of state maps. I wouldnt go without it.

Cheating

I saw the demo on Apple special event video and bought this for $20 No way near to the demo. Very confusing Dont waste your money on this Wonder why Apple supports this I thought I can use it on my new watch like the demo one

Great free features

Great tool for the free features. Havent messed with any of the paid options

Replaced my stand alone GPS

Great application. I use it extensively kayaking and on hikes. Allows saving maps for offline use. Just a well made application. Id like if they added tidal and lunar cycle information to complement the sun up sun down data.

Great app in the Asheville, NC

This app it awesome! I use it almost daily while mtn biking in one of the three national parks in the area. 90% of the trail networks show up and its easy to record routes for later use. Cant wait for the app to work on the iWatch.

Great app

Amazing app for navigation and outdoor activities. The new Skyline feature is too good. Loving it.
